Phase IV

  • Clothing & accessories
  • Toys
  • Household items
  • Furniture

The alternatives in this phase require that we look to the past, and the things our parents and grandparents used before plastic was so widely used.

Alternatives:

Clothing and accessories: Prana

Toys: There are plenty of healthier toy alternatives - check out the following sites for ideas: xxx. Once again, these toys are healthier not only for the planet, but for your child as well.

Household items: Whenever you go out to buy something new, look for an alternative to plastic - there often is one - wooden or ceramic plant pots instead of plastic ones; aluminum/steel garbage cans instead of plastic ones; wooden/metal kitchen utensils instead of plastic ones - you get the idea. Plastic is extremely prevalent - once you become aware of it, it's actually mindboggling. But there are alternatives, and the move away from plastic and show that we don't want it, the more alternatives will become available. Life without plastic can exist - it did for many, many years, and it can again.

Furniture: If you are buying plastic furniture, you are likely buying something that is cheap and less attractive than a non-plastic alternative. Plastic furniture is often attractive, however, because it is less expensive. If you are on a budget, browse garage sales, antique fairs, or look for used, good quality furniture that will last a lifetime. See if there is a FreeCycle Network in your area. Freecycling is a concept that is catching on around the world - it's an email network, local to each town or city, where people can post things they have to give away or things they are looking for. It is a great way to build connections within your community, and keep useful items out of the landfill. To access Powell River's FreeCycle Network, visit http://www.freecycle.org/group/CA/British%20Columbia/Powell%20River   If you are somewhere other than Powell River, Google FreeCycle to find the network closest to you. If there isn't one already in place in your community, start one!
