Making your business greener
One of the biggest differences to the case against plastic will be made by business owners who embrace the opportunity to offer more earth-friendly, healthy alternatives to their customers. There are lots of ways businesses can "go green." It will lessen your impact on the environment, and who knows - maybe it will save you money too! There are some very easy earth-friendly steps that businesses can take - one of the first is to look at the way the place of work is cleaned. Are you using biodegradeable garbage bags and earth-friendly cleaners (or is your cleaning staff)?
- Janitor's Warehouse and Aaron Services are two sources for large volumes of biodegradeable garbage bags
- Nature's PLAstic is a source of compostable plastic containers that can be used by restaurants
Some of the businesses that have taken steps to a plastic-free Powell River include:
- Huckleberry Hutch (offering alternatives for plastic bags and is on the lookout for non-plastic food storage containers)
- Sunshine Organics/ Ecossentials (offering biodegradeable garbage bags, stainless steel drinking containers, several other green products, and the opportunity to use your own cloth produce bags in the delivery bin)
- Silke's Organic Market (offering biodegradeable garbage bags, produce bags, and cloth shopping bags)
- Rene's Pasta (using biodegradeable shopping bags and some corn-based plastic food containers)
- Mitchell Brothers, Save-On-Foods, Safeway, WalMart, Canadian Tire, RONA all offer cloth shopping bag alternatives.
Tips on Books
In our research and travels, we have found a number of amazing books about everything from green cleaning products to green gardening to ideas for greener living. We have written up short reviews and provided their names and authors here, in hopes that these books will be resources for you in your journey to an eco-friendly lifestyle.
'Eco-holic', by Adriana Vasil
This book has become my bible for everything green. It is written by Adriana Vasil, who has been writing a column about everything green in the xxx publication, for years. The focus of this book is not getting rid of everything plastic, but inevitably there are plenty of great ideas about how to move away from plastic in this book. There are also lots of fabulous tips and ideas about how you can be more earth-friendly in general. It lists Canadian companies, and I have found several favourites that I formerly had never heard of. It is a guide for everything from transportation, greening your home, investments, clothing and more. A true gem!! *****
